Barrier repair cream

A barrier repair cream is a moisturiser formulated to help restore the skin's outer layer rather than simply to add surface hydration. It usually combines three classes of ingredient: humectants such as glycerin to draw water in, lipids and emollients such as ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids to refill the spaces between skin cells, and occlusives to slow evaporation.

People reach for one after over-exfoliating, while adjusting to a retinoid, in cold or dry weather, or when familiar products have started to sting. Textures range from light lotions to thick balms, and the best choice is simply the one your skin tolerates comfortably morning and night.

Recovery is gradual and depends on pausing whatever caused the problem — no cream can outpace continued over-exfoliation. Keep the rest of the routine minimal while skin settles, patch test new formulas, and see a dermatologist if skin stays painful, cracked or inflamed instead of layering on more products.
