Ceramide Ratio
The skin barrier is not made of ceramides alone. The lipid matrix between corneocytes is roughly half ceramides, a quarter cholesterol and a fifth free fatty acids, and the three assemble into ordered layers only when all are present. This is why a product can list ceramides prominently and still do less for a damaged barrier than a plainer moisturiser.
The research behind this is specific and worth knowing. Work on barrier recovery found that applying an incomplete lipid mixture — one or two of the three — could actually delay repair compared with a complete one, while an equimolar or ceramide-dominant complete mixture accelerated it. The often-quoted 3:1:1 ratio comes out of that literature; the honest summary is that having all three in a sensible proportion matters more than hitting one exact number.
What this means when reading a label: look for cholesterol and a fatty acid alongside the ceramides, not ceramides alone. Cholesterol is the ingredient most often missing, and it is the one whose absence the research most clearly penalises.
Also worth knowing is that ceramide numbering — NP, AP, EOP — refers to different molecular structures, not different quality grades. A formula containing several tends to sit closer to the skin's own mixture than one containing a single type in isolation.
