Exfoliating Toner
An exfoliating toner is a liquid that combines the light, watery format of a toner with a low dose of chemical exfoliating acids, used after cleansing to gently dissolve dead surface cells. In a routine it sits early, right after cleansing and before serums and moisturiser, and is not rinsed off.
These toners typically carry alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic or lactic acid, beta hydroxy acid (salicylic acid), or a blend, at concentrations meant for regular leave-on use rather than a strong peel. AHAs work on the skin surface to smooth texture and brighten, while BHA is oil-soluble and helps clear pores. Applied with a cotton pad or hands, an exfoliating toner can improve smoothness, radiance, and clarity over time.
They suit dull, uneven, rough, or congestion-prone skin, but frequency should be built up slowly, from a couple of times a week, and adjusted to tolerance. Dry or sensitive skin should choose milder acids and lower use.
- Do not combine with other strong exfoliants or retinoids on the same night unless experienced.
- Follow with hydration and daily sunscreen, as acids increase sun sensitivity.
Stinging, persistent redness, or peeling signals overuse and calls for a lighter hand.
