Film-Former

A film-former is a polymer that dries into a coherent sheet rather than beading up or soaking in. The category is broad and chemically unrelated within itself: acrylate copolymers, polyurethanes, some silicone resins, plant gums, pullulan and modified celluloses all do the job by different means.

In sunscreen they matter more than most readers realise. Ultraviolet filters only protect the skin they cover evenly, and getting an even layer that survives sweat, water and rubbing is a formulating problem solved with film-formers rather than with more filter. Water resistance is largely a film-former property, not a filter property.

Elsewhere they are used for feel and for staying power: a smoothing, light-scattering finish, a mattifying one, a hydrating layer that slows evaporation without an occlusive's heaviness, or a mask that peels away in a single piece.

The cost is compatibility. Two films that shrink at different rates, or a film applied over one that has not finished drying, roll up into the small grey threads known as pilling — which is why layering order and a pause between steps matter more with these products than with plain emulsions. A film also traps what is under it, so a leave-on acid beneath a heavily film-forming sunscreen is not the same exposure as the acid on its own.
