Foam Cleanser
A foam cleanser is a facial wash that produces a rich, airy lather, either whipped from a cream or gel during use or dispensed pre-foamed from a pump. It is a core cleansing step for lifting oil, sweat, and grime, and often serves as the water-based stage of an evening double cleanse.
The lather is created by surfactants, and some traditional foaming washes are soap-based, which raises their pH. Because healthy skin sits at a mildly acidic pH, high-pH or harshly surfactant-heavy foams can disrupt the barrier and leave skin feeling tight. Modern formulas increasingly use gentler, pH-balanced synthetic surfactants that foam well without over-stripping.
- Airy lather driven by surfactants or soap bases.
- Efficiently removes surface oil and sweat.
- Formula pH and surfactant strength determine how gentle it is.
Foam cleansers suit oily and combination skin especially well, where the fresh, degreased finish feels satisfying. Dry, mature, or sensitive skin may find many foaming washes too stripping and often does better with a cream or a mild low-foaming gel. The clearest warning sign is a tight, squeaky feeling afterward. Choosing a pH-balanced, fragrance-free foam and following with moisturizer helps keep the barrier intact.
