Postbiotic Skincare
Postbiotic skincare refers to products built around the beneficial by-products of microbial activity, rather than live microbes themselves. Postbiotics include the metabolites, cell fragments and other compounds that bacteria produce or leave behind, and they are used to support the skin's microbiome and barrier.
Because keeping live bacteria stable in a cosmetic is difficult, postbiotics offer a practical alternative: the useful outputs of microbial life can be included without the challenge of maintaining living cultures. These materials may include short-chain fatty acids, peptides, enzymes, bacterial lysates and ferment filtrates. The idea is that the skin can benefit from these compounds directly, including support for barrier function, hydration and a calmer, more balanced surface.

A practical advantage is stability, as inactivated materials are generally easier to formulate and preserve than live organisms. These ingredients are usually well tolerated, but as with any product, individual sensitivities exist, and complex ferment-based mixtures may occasionally trigger reactions in predisposed skin.
