Formulation

Private Label

Contract manufacturers keep libraries of ready-made formulas — a niacinamide serum, a ceramide cream, a gel cleanser — already developed, already stability-tested, already cleared to sell. A buyer chooses one, picks a fragrance and a bottle, and puts a label on it. That is private label, or white label; the words are used loosely and mean much the same.

It explains a shelf that is otherwise puzzling. Several unrelated brands smell, feel and perform identically, because they are the same product. An ingredient list turns up word for word under three names at three prices. A new brand launches with fifteen products across four categories at once, which no small lab could have developed in the time that brand has existed.

It is not a quality verdict. A well-made catalogue formula from a serious manufacturer beats a badly briefed bespoke one, and plenty of respected products began this way. Responsibility does not move either: whoever places a cosmetic on the market answers for it, and who exactly counts as that and what they must keep on file is set by each market's own rules, so check the ones where you buy.

What private label does undercut is the origin story. Four years in development, our founder's own formula: such lines survive a comparison of ingredient lists less often than they are said. The list, the price, and whether a brand will tell you who makes its products are all more informative.
