Spot Treatment
A spot treatment is a targeted product applied directly to an individual blemish rather than across the whole face. It concentrates an active ingredient on a small area to address a specific pimple, and is used as an occasional corrective step alongside a regular routine rather than as a daily all-over product.
Spot treatments are usually built around a single acne active, commonly benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or sulfur, sometimes at a higher strength than a whole-face product would use. Benzoyl peroxide targets acne-causing bacteria, salicylic acid (a BHA) helps clear the pore, and sulfur helps absorb oil and calm the spot. Some overnight formulas dry to a film, while hydrocolloid pimple patches instead absorb fluid and protect the area, particularly once a blemish has come to a head.
Because these actives are concentrated and applied to already-inflamed skin, spot treatments can be drying or irritating if overused or spread too widely. They are best dabbed only on the blemish, introduced gradually, and not layered with too many other strong actives on the same spot. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach fabric, and daily sun protection remains sensible while treating breakouts. Patch testing first is wise for sensitive skin.
