Vitamin C Oxidation

Pure L-ascorbic acid is the best-evidenced form of topical vitamin C and the least stable molecule in most bathrooms. In water, in the presence of oxygen, it oxidises to dehydroascorbic acid and then to further breakdown products, and the colour change tracks the process: clear or pale straw at the start, yellow as it proceeds, orange-brown when it is largely spent.

A faint yellow tint does not mean the bottle is worthless — oxidation is a gradient, not a switch. Dark orange or brown does mean most of the active is gone, and no amount of the remaining product will do what the label claims. The oxidised form is not dangerous, merely inert, although some people find it stains fabric.

Formulation slows this down rather than stopping it. Low pH keeps ascorbic acid more stable; ferulic acid and vitamin E both extend its life and add their own antioxidant effect, which is why that trio appears together so often; opaque, airless packaging matters more than any marketing claim on the front. Anhydrous formulas avoid the problem by removing the water the reaction needs.

The practical rules are dull and effective: buy small bottles, keep them closed, keep them out of the shower, and replace a serum that has gone properly brown rather than finishing it out of thrift.
