Overview

Finely milled silicon dioxide, used in cosmetics as a powder rather than as an active. Depending on how the particles are made it can absorb oil, blur the look of texture by scattering light, or simply stop a powder from caking.

Who it's for

Mattifying primers, setting powders and sunscreens aiming for a dry, non-shiny finish, and anyone whose complaint is midday shine rather than dryness.

Cautions

Its effects are surface effects and they wash off. Strongly absorbent powders can feel tight or look chalky on skin that is dry or dehydrated, which is a matching problem rather than a fault in the ingredient. Loose powders containing it are worth handling carefully around the face to avoid inhaling airborne dust.
