Acid Mantle

The acid mantle is a thin, slightly acidic film on the surface of the skin, formed from a mixture of sebum, sweat, dead cell components and byproducts of resident microbes. Its mild acidity gives healthy skin a surface pH generally cited in the region of about 4.5 to 5.5.

This acidity is not incidental. It helps keep barrier lipids organised, supports the enzymes involved in shedding old cells, and creates conditions that favour beneficial skin microbes while discouraging some unwanted bacteria. In this sense the acid mantle works together with the skin barrier and the skin microbiome as an interconnected defence system.

In skincare terms, the acid mantle explains why product pH matters. Harsh, high-pH soaps and aggressive cleansing can temporarily raise surface pH and disturb this film, which is why skin can feel tight and reactive afterward; the mantle usually re-establishes itself over time on healthy skin. Gentle, pH-appropriate cleansers and avoiding over-washing help it stay intact. Acidic exfoliants like AHAs work with this natural chemistry, but frequent overuse can leave the surface stripped and sensitised rather than balanced.
