Acid mantle protection

The skin surface sits on the acidic side of neutral. That acidity supports the enzymes that build barrier lipids, keeps desquamation orderly and favours a balanced microbiome. Harsh, high-pH soaps, over-exfoliation and very hot water can push the surface temporarily alkaline; healthy skin recovers, but repeated disruption is what produces tightness, stinging and flaking.

Protecting it is mostly a matter of restraint: a gentle, low-pH cleanser, lukewarm water, fewer active products at once, and a moisturiser containing barrier lipids such as ceramides and cholesterol alongside humectants. Sunscreen matters too, since UV adds oxidative stress to an already stressed barrier.

"pH-balanced" on a label is not a regulated claim, and a toner is not required to "restore" pH — skin does that itself. If redness, itching or soreness persists despite simplifying the routine, see a dermatologist rather than adding more products.
