Cleansing Balm
A cleansing balm is a solid-to-soft oil-based cleanser that melts into an oil on contact with skin and is used to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. It typically sits at the start of a routine, often as the first step of a double cleanse before a water-based cleanser.
Balms are built mostly from oils, butters, and waxes, with emulsifiers that let them rinse away when massaged with water. Because oil dissolves oil, they lift greasy, water-resistant products such as SPF and long-wear makeup more effectively than a foaming wash alone. Many contain conditioning agents so the skin does not feel stripped afterward.
- Massaged onto dry skin to break down makeup and sunscreen.
- Emulsified with water, then rinsed or wiped off.
- Often followed by a gel or foam cleanser to clear residue.
Cleansing balms suit dry, normal, and combination skin especially well, and their cushioned texture appeals to those who find gel cleansers tight. Oily or very acne-prone skin can use them too, but may prefer to follow with a second cleanse to avoid a lingering film. Thorough emulsification and rinsing help prevent clogged pores. Fragranced balms may not suit reactive skin, and any residue near the eyes should be removed carefully.
