Cleansing Oil

A cleansing oil is an oil-based cleanser designed to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, sebum and other oil-soluble impurities that water-based washes struggle to remove. It is most often used as the first step of a double cleanse, followed by a water-based cleanser.

The formula works on the principle that like dissolves like: the oils bind to the oils, waxes and pigments sitting on the skin, lifting them away. Most cleansing oils also contain an emulsifier, so that when water is added the product turns milky and rinses off cleanly rather than leaving a greasy film. Common bases include lightweight plant oils such as jojoba, along with mineral or synthetic esters chosen for their skin feel and rinsability.

It is typically massaged onto dry skin to break down makeup and sunscreen, then emulsified with a little water and rinsed away, ideally followed by a gentler second cleanser. Cleansing oils suit most skin types, including dry skin, and are especially convenient for removing heavy or long-wear makeup and mineral sunscreen. Those prone to congestion or fungal acne may prefer to check the oils used, and anyone finding a particular oil leaves residue can adjust the follow-up cleanse.
