Buffering

Buffering is a technique for softening the impact of a potent active by diluting or cushioning it against the skin. In practice it usually means either mixing a drop of the active into a moisturiser before applying, or laying down a layer of moisturiser first and applying the active on top. It is most often discussed in relation to retinoids, but the same idea is applied to strong acids and other actives that can sting sensitive skin.

The goal is tolerance rather than maximum strength. By slowing how quickly the active reaches and penetrates the skin, buffering can reduce the redness, dryness, and flaking that often accompany the first weeks of a new active, giving the skin barrier time to adjust. The trade-off is that some potency may be lost, since dilution and an intervening layer can lower how much active is effectively delivered. For many people that trade is worthwhile early on, and buffering can be scaled back as the skin builds tolerance.

Buffering is one of several gradual-introduction strategies, alongside short-contact application, using a lower concentration, and spacing applications a few nights apart. A few practical notes:

  • It is a comfort and adjustment tool, not a fix for an active that is fundamentally too strong for a given skin type.
  • The moisturiser used should itself be simple and non-irritating, since it is being applied alongside an already-active layer.
  • Persistent or severe irritation despite buffering is a signal to reduce frequency or seek professional advice rather than push through.
