Micellar Water

Micellar water is a gentle, water-based cleanser that lifts away makeup, oil and surface debris without the foaming or rinsing of a traditional face wash. It looks like plain water but contains tiny clusters of surfactant molecules called micelles, which do the cleansing work.

In a micelle, the oil-loving ends of the surfactant molecules point inwards and the water-loving ends point outwards, so the structure can trap oil and grime in its core while staying dispersed in water. When applied on a cotton pad, the micelles attract and lift away dirt, sunscreen and makeup. Because it uses mild surfactants at low concentration, micellar water tends to be gentle and is often chosen for sensitive or reactive skin, and for quick cleansing when rinsing is not convenient.

It is typically applied by saturating a cotton pad and gently wiping the skin, without hard rubbing. Micellar water is often used as the first step of double cleansing, or as a light standalone cleanse. Some formulas are designed to be left on, but many benefit from a follow-up rinse or second cleanse to remove any residue, especially for heavier makeup or oil-based sunscreen.
