Fungal Acne (Malassezia Folliculitis)

Fungal acne is the popular name for Malassezia folliculitis, an inflammation of the hair follicles driven by an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast that naturally lives on skin. Despite the name, it is not classic acne caused by acne bacteria; it typically appears as uniform, small, itchy bumps clustered on the forehead, chest, back, and shoulders, often in warm, humid, or sweaty conditions.

Because the yeast feeds on certain lipids, many oils and fatty acids in skincare may worsen it, which is why some people react to occlusive or oil-rich products even when those are labelled non-comedogenic for conventional acne. Sweat, heat, tight clothing, and prolonged occlusion can also encourage overgrowth. A key clue is that it often does not respond to standard acne treatments and may feel itchy rather than tender.

  • Antifungal approaches, such as ingredients used to control Malassezia, are the usual direction rather than typical acne actives.
  • Sulfur is sometimes discussed as a supportive option.
