Maskne (Mask Acne)
Maskne is a colloquial term for breakouts and irritation that appear in the areas covered by a face mask, typically across the cheeks, nose, chin and jaw.
Wearing a mask for long periods creates a warm, humid microclimate against the skin. Trapped heat, moisture, sweat and breath can encourage a build-up of oil and dead cells, while friction from the fabric rubs and weakens the surface. Together these can clog follicles, disrupt the skin barrier and aggravate existing conditions, producing a mix of clogged pores, inflamed spots and general redness or chafing.
Care focuses on reducing friction and buildup while keeping the barrier intact.
- Gentle cleansing after mask wear helps clear sweat and oil, and salicylic acid may support pores prone to clogging.
- Niacinamide and barrier-supporting moisturisers can help calm and strengthen irritated skin.
- Using a clean mask, allowing skin breaks where practical, and keeping heavy products light under the mask may reduce flare-ups.
Some mask-related bumps can resemble fungal acne rather than typical acne, so a routine that does not help may need reassessing. Persistent or worsening irritation, or breakouts that do not settle with gentle care, can be discussed with a dermatologist.
