Paraben

Parabens are a family of preservatives, including ingredients such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben, that have been used for decades to protect cosmetics and personal care products from bacteria, mold, and yeast. They are effective at low concentrations, work across a wide pH range, and are among the most extensively studied preservatives in cosmetic chemistry.

In major markets, regulators permit parabens within defined concentration limits. Some longer-chain or less common members of the family have been restricted or banned as a precaution, while widely used ones such as methylparaben and ethylparaben remain permitted at regulated levels. On an ingredient list they appear under their specific names rather than as a single word.

Parabens became a focus of consumer concern, and many brands now market "paraben-free" formulas in response to that preference.
