Preservative
A preservative is an ingredient added to a product to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast, keeping the formula safe to use throughout its shelf life and after it has been opened. Without effective preservation, a contaminated product can cause irritation, infection, or eye problems, which is why preservation is treated as a core safety function rather than an optional extra.
Any formula that contains water needs a preservative system, because water is what microbes require to grow. Preservation can rely on a single ingredient or a combination that covers different types of organisms. Common examples include phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, and certain organic acids such as sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate, often used together for broader coverage.
By contrast, anhydrous products such as oils and balms contain no water and generally need little or no traditional preservative, though they still must be protected from contamination introduced by wet fingers or storage. Permitted preservatives and their maximum levels are regulated in most markets, and formulators typically confirm effectiveness through challenge testing. A few points worth keeping in mind:
- "Preservative-free" usually applies to anhydrous or single-use products, not to typical water-based creams and serums.
- Following the product's period-after-opening guidance helps the preservative system do its job.
