Patch Test

A patch test is a simple at-home method of trying a new product on a small area of skin before applying it more widely, to check for irritation or an allergic reaction.

The purpose is to limit any adverse response to a small, discreet area rather than risking the whole face. It is especially useful before introducing potentially reactive products such as retinoids, exfoliating acids, strongly scented items, or anything applied to sensitive or reactive skin. A patch test cannot predict every reaction, but it lowers the chance of an unpleasant surprise across a large area.

A general approach is as follows:

  • Apply a small amount of the product to a discreet spot, such as the inner forearm or the skin just below the ear along the jaw.
  • Leave it undisturbed and avoid washing the area, following the product's normal usage where relevant.
  • Repeat over a few days for leave-on products, since some reactions build up with repeated exposure.
  • Watch for redness, itching, burning, swelling, or bumps, and stop use if any appear.

Mild, brief tingling can be normal with some active ingredients, but persistent stinging, spreading redness, or blistering signals that a product is not suitable. If a strong reaction occurs, rinse the area and discontinue use; seek medical advice for a severe or spreading response. A patch test is a precaution that reduces risk; it does not remove it entirely, and results on one area may not perfectly reflect more delicate facial skin.
