The acid counterpart of sodium benzoate and, like it, only meaningfully antimicrobial when the formula sits at an acidic pH. It covers bacteria and yeast, and pairs naturally with sorbic acid, which leans the other way toward mold.

Cautions
Loses most of its activity above roughly pH 5; not something you would choose a product for, and stinging is possible on already-compromised skin.
