How it works

Butylene glycol is a small-molecule diol — an alcohol carrying two hydroxyl groups — manufactured synthetically at industrial scale, with CAS number 107-88-0. It plays three roles at once. As a humectant it draws and retains moisture. As a solvent it dissolves and evenly disperses other ingredients, including plant extracts and actives that are poorly soluble in water on their own, which is often the practical reason it appears high on an ingredient list. And it modifies viscosity, helping set how a serum or essence flows. What it is not is a treatment active: it carries no independent efficacy claim of its own, and its value is in what it lets the rest of the formula do.

The evidence

Its function is well established in formulation chemistry rather than in clinical trials, which is the correct standard to judge it by. The one consumer-facing property worth knowing is sensory: butylene glycol is generally considered to have a lighter, less tacky skin feel than glycerin, and that is a large part of why formulators reach for it in lightweight serums and essences instead of, or alongside, glycerin.

Generally well tolerated across skin types. It is occasionally flagged on "clean beauty" ingredient-avoidance lists over irritation concerns, but the peer-reviewed safety literature does not support it as a significant irritant at cosmetic-use concentrations for the general population — worth knowing if you have been told to avoid it.
