Essence
An essence is a lightweight, water-based skincare product, popularised within Korean routines, that sits between a toner and a serum. It is typically thinner and more fluid than a serum, and its main purpose is to add a layer of hydration and prepare the skin to absorb the products that follow.
Essences are usually built around humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, and often feature fermented ingredients like galactomyces or bifida ferment lysate, which are used to support a smooth, hydrated feel. Concentrations of active ingredients tend to be lower than in a serum or ampoule, so an essence is generally treated as a hydrating and conditioning step rather than a targeted treatment.
In a routine, an essence is applied after cleansing and toning, and before serums and moisturiser, usually by patting a few drops into damp skin with the hands. It suits most skin types and is especially useful for dehydrated or dull-looking skin. Some layering methods, such as the 7-skin method, apply several thin coats to build hydration gradually.
- Apply to slightly damp skin for better spreadability
- Layer before heavier serums, oils and creams
- Check the ingredient list if you are sensitive to fragrance or alcohol
