How it works
Ceramides are waxy sphingolipids that form a major structural component of the stratum corneum. The cosmetic industry names them with a shorthand code describing their chemistry: in Ceramide NP the N marks a non-hydroxy fatty acid chain and the P a phytosphingosine base. Alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids — commonly cited as assembling in an approximate 3:1:1 molar ratio — ceramides build the lamellar lipid bilayers that fill the space between corneocytes. Those bilayers are the skin's primary defence against transepidermal water loss and against irritants and allergens moving inward. Topically applied ceramides are believed to integrate into that existing lipid matrix, replenishing barrier lipids depleted by ageing, harsh cleansing, UV damage, or conditions such as atopic dermatitis.
The evidence
Multiple clinical studies, including barrier-repair trials in atopic dermatitis and in photoaged skin, support ceramide-containing moisturisers for reducing transepidermal water loss and improving clinical measures of barrier function. The nuance worth knowing is that the ratio and blend of ceramide species is generally considered more important than any single ceramide alone, because the aim is to reproduce how skin organises its own lipids. Ceramide NP, still sold under the older numeric name Ceramide 3, is one of the most common species in those blends — but evidence for a complete barrier-lipid system is not the same thing as evidence for one molecule in isolation.
Suitability
Useful across all skin types, and particularly valuable for dry, eczema-prone, ageing or barrier-compromised skin — including skin currently on a retinoid or acid routine, where barrier support reduces irritation.
Concentration
Barrier-repair formulations typically use a ceramide blend at roughly 0.5%–2% total lipid content, often with cholesterol and fatty acids in delivery systems such as multivesicular emulsions. A bigger number on the label is not a reliable signal of a better product here; composition matters more than percentage.
Conflicts & combinations
Ceramides are compatible with virtually every other active and are best treated as a supportive rather than a conflicting ingredient. They perform best formulated with cholesterol and free fatty acids in a ratio approximating the skin's own, and pair naturally with barrier-supportive humectants such as glycerin.
