How it works
Inulin is a polysaccharide — a chain of fructose units with a terminal glucose — stored by chicory, agave and Jerusalem artichoke as an energy reserve. Cosmetic grades come mostly from chicory root. It is water-soluble, unreactive and film-forming at higher levels, which makes it easy to place in almost any water-based formula.
It does two things. As a polysaccharide it binds water and lays down a light hydrating film, so it behaves as a modest humectant and texture agent. The more interesting claim is prebiotic: human skin cells cannot digest inulin, but some resident bacteria can, so supplying it is meant to shift the balance of the skin's microbial community toward the residents and away from opportunists. It is often paired with alpha-glucan oligosaccharide for the same purpose.
The evidence
The humectant part is uncontroversial chemistry. The prebiotic part is where care is needed. Most of the supporting work comes from the ingredient suppliers themselves, using their own blends and their own microbiological endpoints, and independent replication on skin is limited.
The broader problem is that skin microbiome research is young. What a healthy community looks like varies by body site, age and person; the link between a measured shift in bacterial populations and a visible improvement in someone's skin is mostly assumed rather than demonstrated. That does not make the idea wrong, but it does mean a product cannot honestly promise an outcome from it.
Suitability
- All skin types, including sensitive — it is bland, non-acidic and carries no adjustment period
- Gentle cleansers and lightweight hydrators, where it adds slip without weight
- Formulas wanting microbiome positioning without live cultures, which are difficult to keep alive in a preserved product
- Not a treatment for acne, eczema or seborrheic dermatitis, whatever the microbial framing suggests
Concentration
No established figure. Suppliers publish suggested use ranges for their own blends, and those are recommendations rather than trial-derived thresholds, so quoting one as an effective concentration would misrepresent what is known. Its role in a formula is usually supporting rather than headline, and inulin high enough to matter for texture will be noticeable in how the product feels.
Conflicts & combinations
None documented. It is stable, pH-tolerant and compatible with essentially everything used in skincare, including acids and retinoids. It is a sugar, so it is a potential food source for spoilage organisms as well as skin residents, which is a preservation consideration for the formulator rather than a user problem in a properly preserved product. Paired with glycerin it improves the feel of an otherwise sticky hydrator.

Is a prebiotic the same as a probiotic?
No. A probiotic is live organisms; a prebiotic is food for organisms already present. Inulin is the second, which is also why it is easier to keep stable in a bottle.
Does it actually change my skin's bacteria?
Supplier studies report shifts in bacterial populations. Whether that shift produces a visible improvement is the step the evidence does not yet cover, so treat the claim cautiously.
Will it help my acne?
There is no basis for saying so. Acne involves sebum, follicular keratinisation and inflammation as well as bacteria, and treatments tested against it exist. Ask a clinician rather than a prebiotic.
Is it sticky?
On its own it is less sticky than glycerin at comparable levels and is often used to make a humectant blend feel lighter. High levels can leave a slight film.
Can it be used with acids and retinoids?
Yes. It is inert across the pH range cosmetics use and does not interfere with either.
