Ampoule
An ampoule is a concentrated, treatment-focused skincare product, most associated with Korean and Japanese routines, that typically carries a higher dose of active ingredients than a standard serum. It is designed as a booster step for a specific concern such as dehydration, dullness, uneven tone or the look of fine lines.
In practice the line between an ampoule and a serum is not strictly defined and varies by brand, but ampoules are generally marketed as the more potent, targeted option. They are often built around a hero ingredient at a meaningful concentration, for example niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C or a peptide blend, in a fluid or lightly viscous base. Some are sold in small single-use vials meant to be finished over a short course.
Because of their concentration, ampoules are usually used sparingly, either as a short intensive treatment or a few times a week rather than as an everyday layer. In a routine they are applied after cleansing, toning and essence, and before heavier serums or moisturiser. Introducing a new ampoule gradually and patch testing first is sensible, particularly for sensitive skin or when it contains stronger actives.
