Anti-Aging Serum

An anti-aging serum is a lightweight leave-on product concentrated around ingredients associated with the visible signs of ageing. “Anti-aging” is a marketing category rather than a regulated one, so the name on the front of the box tells you less than the ingredient list on the back.

The ingredients that recur are retinoids for texture and the look of fine lines; vitamin C and other antioxidants for tone and defence against oxidative stress; peptides; niacinamide; and hydrating agents such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid that plump the surface temporarily. A serum usually goes on after cleansing and toning and before moisturiser, so its actives meet skin directly.

Two practical cautions. First, several strong serums layered together tend to irritate rather than compound benefits — pick one active focus per routine. Second, retinoids and acids increase sun sensitivity, and retinoids are avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Patch test new serums, introduce them gradually, and treat persistent irritation as a signal to stop and consult a professional.
