Routine

Barrier-first routine

A barrier-first routine is a way of building a regimen rather than a rescue plan for damaged skin: cleanse gently, moisturise well and protect from UV every day, and only then consider adding actives. It treats a comfortable, resilient barrier as the foundation everything else depends on.

The reasoning is that actives work in the skin rather than on it, and irritated skin tolerates them poorly. Someone following this approach might spend several weeks with only a mild cleanser, a lipid-containing moisturiser and daily sunscreen before introducing a single serum, then add further steps slowly, one at a time and at low frequency.

It is worth contrasting with a barrier repair routine, which is remedial and temporary; barrier-first is preventive and ongoing. It is not an argument for avoiding actives altogether, and it is never a reason to delay treatment for a diagnosed condition — if you use prescription topicals, follow the plan your clinician set and raise any concerns with them.
