Combination Skin
Combination skin is a skin type that shows more than one behaviour across the face at the same time, typically an oilier central zone alongside normal or drier outer areas. It is one of the most commonly reported skin types and can shift with season, climate and hormonal changes.
The pattern is usually described as a T-zone effect: the forehead, nose and chin produce more sebum and can look shiny or show visibly larger pores, while the cheeks, jaw and areas around the eyes feel comfortable or occasionally tight and dry. Because the two zones have different needs, a single product applied uniformly may leave one area under-served. Sebum output is influenced by genetics, temperature and humidity, so the balance between zones is not fixed.
Care is generally directed at treating zones according to their behaviour rather than treating the whole face as oily or as dry. Lightweight, non-comedogenic textures such as gel-creams tend to suit the whole face, with richer moisturiser applied more generously where skin feels dry. Ingredients often discussed for the oilier zone include niacinamide, which is associated with supporting a balanced-looking complexion.
- Cleanse gently; harsh or stripping cleansers can prompt more shine.
- Apply lighter textures overall and layer richer product only where needed.
- Finish daytime routines with broad-spectrum sunscreen.
If oiliness, congestion or dry patches remain persistent or uncomfortable despite consistent care, a dermatologist can help tailor an approach.
