Gel Cream

A gel cream is a hybrid moisturiser with the light, water-rich feel of a gel and enough emollient content to behave like a cream; in a routine it is applied as the moisturising step after serums and essences. The format aims to hydrate and give a soft finish without the weight of a classic rich cream.

Formulators build gel creams around a high water phase and humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, thickened into a bouncy or jelly-like gel and carrying a modest amount of lightweight oils or silicones for slip and a light seal. The result absorbs quickly, feels cooling, and leaves little residue, which is why gel creams are popular for daytime use under sunscreen or makeup.

They suit normal, combination, oily, and dehydrated skin, and warmer or more humid conditions where heavier creams feel suffocating. Very dry or compromised skin in cold weather may find a gel cream insufficient on its own and benefit from a richer layer on top.
