Enzyme Exfoliant
An enzyme exfoliant is a product that uses protein-digesting enzymes to loosen and dissolve the bonds holding dead skin cells together, allowing them to shed more easily. It is often described as one of the gentlest ways to exfoliate the skin's surface.
The enzymes most commonly used come from fruit and other natural sources, including papain from papaya, bromelain from pineapple, and enzymes derived from pumpkin. They act as proteases, breaking down keratin proteins in the outermost layer of dead cells. Unlike acids, which alter pH and work chemically across the surface, enzymes selectively target the protein cement between cells, which is why they tend to feel milder and cause less stinging.

While gentler, they are not free of risk: any exfoliation can be overdone, and enzymes derived from fruit may occasionally provoke sensitivity or allergic reactions in predisposed individuals. Sun protection remains advisable after any form of exfoliation.
