Desquamation (Skin Shedding)

Desquamation is the natural process by which the outermost skin cells detach and shed from the surface. It is the final visible stage of the skin's continuous renewal cycle.

Skin cells called keratinocytes form in the lower epidermis and migrate upward, flattening and filling with keratin as they rise. By the time they reach the stratum corneum they are dead, flattened corneocytes held together by protein bridges called corneodesmosomes. Enzymes gradually dissolve these bridges so that cells release one by one, usually in imperceptible clusters rather than large flakes. In balanced skin this shedding stays synchronised with the production of new cells beneath it, keeping the surface smooth and even.

When desquamation slows or becomes uneven, dead cells accumulate, which can leave skin looking dull, rough or flaky and may contribute to clogged pores. The enzymes involved depend on adequate hydration, so a compromised or dry barrier often disrupts orderly shedding. Supportive measures include consistent moisturising to maintain the water content the enzymes need, and gentle chemical exfoliants such as alpha or beta hydroxy acids, which help loosen cell bonds when shedding is sluggish.

Because turnover naturally slows with age and environmental stress, gentle support is generally preferred over aggressive scrubbing, which can irritate the surface and worsen roughness.
