Mineral (Physical) Sunscreen

A mineral sunscreen, also called a physical sunscreen, is a sun-protection product whose active ultraviolet filters are the inorganic minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

These filters sit largely on the skin surface and reduce UV reaching living cells by absorbing and scattering the radiation. Zinc oxide covers a wide range including much of the UVA band, giving it inherent broad-spectrum character, while titanium dioxide is a strong UVB and shorter-UVA filter; the two are often combined. Because the minerals are not readily absorbed and are considered low-irritation, mineral formulas are frequently chosen for sensitive, reactive, or young skin and are common in products marketed for these groups.

The main practical trade-off is cosmetic. Mineral filters can leave a visible white or gray cast, most noticeable on deeper skin tones, though modern tinted and micronized formulas reduce this. Textures can feel thicker, and even coverage matters because the film provides the protection.

  • Apply a generous, even layer and allow it to set before dressing or applying makeup.
  • Reapply periodically during sun exposure, commonly suggested at roughly every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

Mineral and chemical sunscreens both provide effective protection when properly formulated and applied; the choice is largely about skin preference, tolerance, and cosmetic feel. As with any sunscreen, checking for a broad-spectrum label and an adequate SPF matters more than the filter type alone. A product being mineral does not by itself guarantee it is stronger or gentler than a well-made alternative.
