Chemical (Organic) Sunscreen
A chemical sunscreen, also called an organic sunscreen, is a sun-protection product whose active filters are carbon-based molecules that absorb ultraviolet radiation.
These filters work by taking up UV energy and releasing it as a small amount of heat, reducing the radiation that reaches living skin cells. Common examples include avobenzone, which covers UVA, along with UVB filters and newer broad-range filters such as those in the Tinosorb family. Because no single organic filter covers the whole ultraviolet spectrum well, formulators usually blend several to reach broad-spectrum protection, and some filters need stabilizing partners to stay effective in sunlight.
Chemical sunscreens are valued for their cosmetic feel. They tend to be lighter, spread more easily, and leave little or no white cast, which makes them popular for daily wear and under makeup. The trade-off is that some organic filters can cause stinging or irritation on very sensitive skin or near the eyes, and a minority of users react to specific ingredients.
- Apply an even, adequate layer to clean skin; some products suggest allowing a short time to set before sun exposure.
- Reapply periodically during sun exposure, commonly suggested at roughly every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
Chemical and mineral sunscreens can both deliver strong, effective protection when well formulated; the better choice depends on skin tolerance and cosmetic preference. As with any sunscreen, a broad-spectrum label and an adequate SPF matter more than the filter category. Those with reactive skin may prefer to patch test a new chemical sunscreen before regular use.
