7-Skin Method

The 7-skin method is a Korean skincare technique in which a hydrating toner or thin, watery essence is layered onto the skin up to seven times in a single session. In Korean, the word for toner is often rendered as skin, which is the origin of the name; the number seven is illustrative rather than a strict requirement.

The idea is to build hydration gradually through several thin layers rather than one heavy application, allowing each layer to absorb before the next is pressed in. This relies on humectant ingredients that draw and hold water in the upper skin, and the method is aimed at boosting moisture and giving a plump, dewy finish, particularly for dry or dehydrated skin.

  • Cleanse, then apply a hydrating, alcohol-free toner or essence to damp skin.
  • Pat in each layer until absorbed, repeating for several rounds.
  • Adjust the number of layers to what the skin comfortably takes.
  • Follow with a moisturiser to seal in the water.

Seven layers is not a target for everyone; oily or acne-prone skin may prefer fewer, and the products used should be genuinely hydrating rather than astringent or high in alcohol. Because the technique only adds water, sealing with an emollient or occlusive afterwards helps prevent that moisture from evaporating. If layering causes stinging, congestion, or irritation, fewer layers or gentler products are advisable.
