Tinted Sunscreen
A tint in a sunscreen is usually assumed to be cosmetic — a way to cancel the white cast of mineral filters. It does that, but the more interesting effect is that the pigments doing the tinting are iron oxides, and iron oxides absorb visible light.
That matters because ultraviolet is not the only wavelength that drives pigmentation. Visible light, particularly the high-energy blue end, induces pigment in deeper skin tones — the effect is demonstrable in phototypes IV to VI and much weaker in lighter skin. Standard SPF testing measures none of this, so an untinted SPF 50 can be excellent against UV and still leave melasma unchanged.
This is why tinted sunscreen has become the standard dermatological recommendation for melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation rather than a cosmetic preference. If a pigmentation problem is not responding to a good routine and a high SPF, whether the sunscreen carries iron oxides is one of the first things worth checking.
The practical catch is shade range: a tint that does not match reads as a foundation you did not choose, which is the reason people stop reapplying. A tinted product you reapply at midday beats an ideal one you skip.
