Broad-Spectrum (Sunscreen)

Broad-spectrum is a label term indicating that a sunscreen protects against both UVB and UVA ultraviolet radiation, rather than UVB alone.

Sunlight reaches the skin as two relevant wavelength bands. UVB is the main driver of sunburn and is strongly linked to skin cancer, while UVA penetrates more deeply and is associated with photoaging such as wrinkles and pigmentation, and also contributes to long-term damage. An SPF number describes only the UVB burn-protection side, so a high SPF alone does not guarantee meaningful UVA coverage. The broad-spectrum designation exists to signal that both bands are addressed. In many regions a product must pass a standardized test relating its UVA protection to its SPF before it may use the term.

Broad-spectrum protection is achieved by combining filters or using filters that absorb or reflect across a wide range. Mineral filters such as zinc oxide provide inherently wide coverage, while organic filters are often blended to close UVA gaps.

For daily use, a broad-spectrum product is generally preferred over one labeled only with an SPF value. As with any sunscreen, adequate coverage depends on applying enough product and reapplying periodically during sun exposure, commonly suggested at roughly every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Broad-spectrum labeling describes the type of protection, not its strength; it is best read alongside the SPF and, where available, a UVA indicator such as a PA rating.
