Tyrosinase Inhibitor
A tyrosinase inhibitor is an ingredient that slows or blocks tyrosinase, the key enzyme that controls the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour. Reducing this enzyme's activity is one of the main strategies for fading dark spots and evening out skin tone.
Melanin is made inside pigment cells through a series of reactions in which tyrosinase acts as the rate-limiting step, converting the amino acid tyrosine toward melanin. When tyrosinase is partially inhibited, less pigment is formed, so newly produced skin appears lighter over time. Inhibitors do not remove existing pigment directly; they work upstream, which is why visible fading is gradual and depends on the skin's natural cell turnover.
- Common examples include kojic acid, arbutin (and its precursor hydroquinone), azelaic acid, and to varying degrees niacinamide, which acts partly by limiting pigment transfer rather than the enzyme itself.
- Typically used for melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, sunspots and general dullness.
Tyrosinase inhibitors are most effective when combined with daily sun protection, because ultraviolet exposure directly stimulates the enzyme and can undo progress. Individual ingredients differ in strength, stability and irritation potential, and some, such as hydroquinone, are regulated or restricted in certain regions. Results generally build over several weeks to months of consistent use, and overly aggressive combinations can cause irritation that paradoxically worsens pigmentation.
