Melanin

Melanin is the pigment that gives skin, hair, and eyes their colour, produced by specialised cells called melanocytes. In the skin it is a natural defence: melanin absorbs and scatters ultraviolet radiation, helping to shield deeper cells and their DNA from some UV damage. Differences in skin tone reflect the type, amount, and distribution of melanin rather than the number of pigment cells.

Melanin production is driven largely by an enzyme called tyrosinase, and it ramps up in response to UV exposure, which is why skin tans after sun. This same responsiveness explains many common pigmentation concerns. When melanin is produced unevenly or in excess, it can settle into patches of hyperpigmentation, including sunspots, and post-inflammatory marks left after acne or injury. Because melanin synthesis is closely tied to UV and to inflammation, these concerns often overlap with sun exposure and skin irritation.

  • Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is foundational, since UV both triggers new pigment and darkens existing marks.

Pigmentation is often slow to change and prone to returning without sun protection, so patience and consistency matter more than any single brightening product. Aggressive attempts to lighten skin can backfire by causing irritation that stimulates more pigment. The most reliable approach pairs gentle, evidence-informed actives with rigorous daily UV defence, and treats melanin as a protective system to be balanced rather than eliminated.
