How it works

Coco-glucoside belongs to the alkyl polyglucosides, a family made by joining glucose from starch to fatty alcohols derived from coconut oil. The sugar head is water-loving, the fatty tail oil-loving, and between them they do what every surfactant does: surround oil and grime so water can carry it away. What separates the class from sulfates is charge. Alkyl polyglucosides are nonionic, so they interact far less with the proteins and lipids of the stratum corneum, and it is that protein interaction — not the cleaning itself — that produces the tight, stripped feeling people describe after a harsh wash.

The evidence

Alkyl polyglucosides are consistently among the lowest-irritation surfactants in standard comparative testing, well below sodium lauryl sulfate on the same scales, which is why they dominate cleansers designed for sensitive skin, infants and eczema-prone skin. Their well-documented weakness is foam: they produce a modest, fine lather rather than the dense one shoppers associate with cleaning, which is why they are almost always blended with a secondary surfactant such as cocamidopropyl betaine to build it back up.

Suitability

Well suited to dry, sensitive and barrier-impaired skin, and safe on the rest. Contact allergy is possible, as it is with any ingredient, but genuinely uncommon relative to how widely it appears. Anyone who has decided sulfates are the problem should check what replaced them — a badly balanced sugar-surfactant cleanser can still leave skin tight.

Concentration

Roughly 2% to 10% of a facial cleanser and higher in body washes, though the raw material is supplied as a solution rather than a solid, so the number on a formulator's sheet and the actual active content are not the same thing. The point most worth knowing is pH: the concentrate is strongly alkaline as delivered and has to be brought down, typically to somewhere near 5, for the finished cleanser to respect the acid mantle.

Conflicts & combinations

It is routinely combined with cocamidopropyl betaine or decyl glucoside for better foam and flow, and it works as a mild solubiliser for small amounts of oil. There are no conflicts with actives in any meaningful sense, since a cleanser is on the skin for a minute. The claim worth resisting is that plant-derived surfactants cannot over-cleanse: a long, hot, twice-daily wash with any of them will still leave a dry face.

Is coco-glucoside gentler than sulfates?

Yes, on the evidence available. It is nonionic and interacts much less with skin proteins than sodium lauryl sulfate, which is why it is standard in cleansers built for sensitive and infant skin.

Why does my cleanser barely foam?

That is the ingredient behaving normally. Alkyl polyglucosides make a modest, fine lather. Foam volume measures nothing about how well a cleanser cleans.

Is it the same as decyl glucoside?

They are close relatives from the same family, differing in the fatty alcohol chain used. Both are mild sugar surfactants and formulators pick between them for foam and feel rather than for safety.

Is it safe for babies and eczema-prone skin?

It is one of the surfactants most often chosen for exactly those products, because of its low irritation profile. As always the finished formula and its pH matter more than any single ingredient.

Can it still dry my skin out?

Yes. It is milder, not inert. Water temperature, wash duration and frequency all contribute, and a mild surfactant used harshly still leaves skin tight.
