How it works

Dimethicone is a linear silicone polymer — a chain of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms with methyl groups hanging off it. That backbone gives it a combination no oil offers: it spreads into an extremely thin, even film, it is permeable to water vapour, and it is chemically inert.

On skin that film does two useful things. It slows water loss from the surface without sealing it shut, so barrier-compromised skin holds hydration while still exchanging vapour. And it fills the microscopic gaps between dead surface cells, which is why a product with dimethicone in it makes texture look smoother the moment it goes on, before anything has changed biologically.

The evidence

Barrier work is where the strongest support sits: silicone films measurably reduce transepidermal water loss, and medical-grade silicone gels and sheets are a standard, guideline-backed option for managing hypertrophic and keloid scars over months of use. That is a stronger evidence base than most cosmetic ingredients carry.

The two common accusations do not survive contact with the chemistry. Dimethicone does not suffocate skin — the film is vapour-permeable, which is precisely why it is used on healing wounds. And it does not build up: the polymer is far too large to enter a pore or cross the stratum corneum, and it is removed by ordinary cleansing with surfactants. What people describe as build-up is usually a heavy occlusive layer over an under-cleansed face.

Suitability

  • Dry and barrier-damaged skin: the water-loss reduction is the main event
  • Sensitive and reactive skin: inert, fragrance-free by nature, very low allergy rate
  • Oily and acne-prone skin: usually fine — dimethicone is non-comedogenic in practice, though the rich creams it appears in may not be

Concentration

Anywhere from about 1% for slip in a serum to 15% or more in a primer or barrier cream. There is no dose you need to hit; the percentage is a texture decision, not an efficacy one.

Conflicts & combinations

None chemically — it is inert and pairs with every active. Layering order is the only practical consideration: a silicone film applied first can slow the spread of a water-based serum over it, so treatment steps go on before it, not after. The real caveat is environmental rather than dermatological: silicone polymers are not readily biodegradable, and the cyclic siloxanes D4 and D5 in particular are restricted in the EU. Dimethicone itself is a linear polymer and is treated separately, but the family-level concern is legitimate and is why some brands have moved away from it.

Does dimethicone clog pores?
