How it works
Ethylhexylglycerin is a synthetic glyceryl ether made from glycerin and 2-ethylhexanol, CAS 70445-33-9. Its main job is to enhance the efficacy of other preservative systems — most commonly phenoxyethanol, with which it is very frequently paired — by disrupting microbial cell membranes. Weakening the organism makes the primary preservative more effective, which in turn allows formulators to use a lower total preservative concentration than they otherwise would. Separately, it has mild deodorant and antimicrobial activity against the skin bacteria associated with body odour, which is why the same ingredient turns up in deodorant formulations.
The evidence
Its standing is a matter of cosmetic chemistry rather than clinical dermatology: the preservative-enhancing and mild skin-conditioning function is well established in formulation practice. It is not marketed or supported as a skincare active with independent efficacy claims, and nobody should expect it to do anything visible to the skin. Judging it by the standards applied to niacinamide or retinol would be a category error — the right question is whether the preservative system it serves keeps the product safe to use.
Suitability
Generally well tolerated. Rare contact sensitisation has been reported in some individuals, which is unremarkable for the emulsifier- and preservative-adjacent ingredient classes, but worth noting for anyone with a history of reacting to cosmetic excipients rather than to actives.
Concentration
Typically used at 0.5%–1%, in combination with a primary preservative such as phenoxyethanol rather than on its own.
Conflicts & combinations
The defining combination is with phenoxyethanol, which is capped at 1% in finished cosmetic products under the EU Cosmetics Regulation — the whole point of the booster is to get adequate preservation within limits like that one. No conflicts with treatment actives are described, and it is unrestricted under EU CosIng and FDA guidelines.
