Oleic Acid

INCI · Oleic Acid · also Omega-9 fatty acid, Cis-9-octadecenoic acid

Revelika safety grade

Overview

The dominant monounsaturated fatty acid in olive, avocado, marula and many other plant oils, and the reason those oils feel rich and sink in slowly. It softens and conditions, and it loosens the packing of the skin's own lipids enough to help other ingredients pass through.

Who it's for

Dry and dehydrated skin that wants a cushioned, slow-absorbing oil rather than a fast-drying one.

Cautions

That same permeability effect is why oleic-rich oils are often reported as poorly tolerated on compromised or acne-prone skin; the evidence is mixed and the response individual, so treat it as a reason to patch test rather than a rule. Oils are blends, and the oleic-to-linoleic ratio shifts with crop and pressing, so the label rarely tells you the proportion you are getting.
