How it works

Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid — related to the amino acids but not one of the ones built into proteins. It occurs widely in mammalian tissue, skin included, and its established role is as an organic osmolyte: a small molecule a cell can accumulate to balance the osmotic pull of its surroundings without disturbing the proteins doing the work. Cells under salt or water stress raise their osmolyte content; that is standard cell physiology rather than a cosmetic claim.

Skincare borrows the idea. In a formula taurine behaves as a humectant, holding water and contributing to how a hydrating layer feels and performs, and it is usually paired with the other osmolytes rather than used alone.

The evidence

The underlying biology is solid and not in question. What is thin is the step from that biology to a measured result on human skin from taurine specifically.

Most of what circulates in the skincare context is supplier documentation, laboratory work, or trials of finished products containing taurine alongside several other hydrating ingredients, which cannot separate its contribution from theirs. That is not a reason to distrust the ingredient — it is a reason not to expect it to carry a product.

One thing worth setting aside: taurine is well known as an energy-drink ingredient, and the oral literature concerns other tissues and other questions entirely. None of it transfers to a cream.
