Keratinocyte
A keratinocyte is the main cell type of the epidermis, the skin's outer layer, and it makes up the great majority of the cells there. Keratinocytes produce keratin, a tough protein that gives skin its protective, resilient quality, and collectively they form the barrier that keeps water in and irritants out.
These cells follow a continuous life cycle that shapes how skin looks and functions. New keratinocytes are made in the deepest part of the epidermis and gradually move upward, changing as they go. By the time they reach the surface they have flattened and lost their nuclei, forming the stratum corneum, the protective outer sheet of tightly packed cells. Eventually they are shed in a process called desquamation, completing a cycle known as cell turnover. When this turnover is healthy, skin tends to look smooth and clear; when it slows or becomes disordered, the surface can appear dull, rough, or flaky, and dead cells may build up.
