Mineral vs Chemical Sunscreen

The naming is the first thing to fix. Every sunscreen filter is a chemical, and both families work primarily the same way: they absorb ultraviolet energy and release it as a negligible amount of heat. The old teaching that mineral filters sit on top and reflect light like a mirror is largely wrong — zinc oxide reflects a small share and absorbs the rest.

The real differences are practical. Mineral filters — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — are photostable, work the moment they are applied, are the least likely to sting or trigger a reaction, and are what dermatologists reach for on children, on rosacea and on post-procedure skin. Their cost is cosmetic: a white or grey cast that is a genuine problem on deeper skin tones, and a thicker feel.

Organic filters are cosmetically elegant, easy to wear at high SPF, and available in far better modern forms in Europe and Asia than in the United States, where the approved list has barely changed in decades. Some of the older ones photodegrade or absorb systemically, which is why the individual filter matters more than the family.

The choice that actually protects skin is the one you will apply generously every day. A mineral sunscreen left in a drawer because it leaves a cast protects nothing.
