Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress is a state of imbalance in which the production of reactive oxygen species and other free radicals outpaces the skin's ability to neutralise them and repair the resulting damage. It is less a single event than a background pressure that builds when defences are outmatched.

The skin is especially exposed to this imbalance because it sits at the boundary with the environment. UV radiation, air pollution, tobacco smoke, and even psychological stress can raise radical production, while the natural antioxidant reserves that keep them in check gradually decline with age. When the balance tips, radicals attack lipids, proteins, and DNA, degrade collagen and elastin, and disturb the barrier. Clinically this is linked to accelerated photoaging, dullness, uneven tone, and a reduced capacity to recover from daily insults. Oxidative stress also interacts with related processes such as glycation and inflammation, which can compound the visible effects.

  • Sun protection is foundational, since UV is a major and controllable source of oxidative load.
  • Antioxidant ingredients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, niacinamide, and various plant polyphenols support the skin's defences.
  • Sleep, not smoking, and limiting pollution exposure reduce the systemic contribution.

It is important to keep claims proportionate. Topical antioxidants can help reduce oxidative burden but do not stop ageing or reverse deep structural change, and results are gradual. Framing oxidative stress as one modifiable factor among several, rather than a single cause with a single cure, gives a more accurate picture of why consistent, preventive care matters more than any one product.
