How it works

Ethylhexyl palmitate is an ester: palmitic acid joined to 2-ethylhexanol. That pairing produces a light, silky oil that spreads thin and dries to a powdery, non-greasy finish, which is why it appears in sunscreens, primers, foundations and anything sold on a weightless feel.

It has a second job as a solvent. Several UV filters are solids that must be dissolved before they can be spread evenly, and ethylhexyl palmitate is one of the esters used to do it — so in a sunscreen it is often doing structural work rather than sitting there as an emollient.

The evidence

This is one of the ingredients where the honest answer is that the popular ratings and the clinical picture disagree, and the disagreement is worth understanding rather than resolving by picking a side.

Comedogenicity ratings for it circulate at 2 and at 4, and both come from the rabbit-ear assay — a test that reliably over-predicts for human skin, which is why formulators stopped treating it as decisive decades ago. What can be said is that it is an ester of a long-chain fatty acid, that family does have a real association with congestion in acne-prone users, and enough people report breakouts on it that dismissing the pattern would be dishonest. Enough others use it without trouble that treating it as a guaranteed pore-clogger would be equally wrong.

The clearer issue is Malassezia. The yeast behind fungal acne — Pityrosporum folliculitis — metabolises fatty acids in a specific chain-length range, and palmitate esters fall inside it. If you have diagnosed fungal acne, this is an ingredient to avoid, and that is a much firmer statement than anything about comedogenicity.

Suitability

  • Dry, normal and combination skin: an elegant emollient with no particular drawback
  • Acne-prone skin: introduce it aware that it may not suit you, and watch what happens
  • Fungal acne: avoid — this one is not a judgement call

Concentration

Commonly 2–15%, higher in colour cosmetics and sunscreens where it doubles as a solvent. The percentage tells you about texture, not about risk.

Conflicts & combinations

No chemical conflicts. If you are working out whether a sunscreen is breaking you out, this ester is one of the two or three ingredients worth suspecting first — alongside the filters themselves — because it is present in quantity and its role means it cannot simply be left out of the formula.
