Dermis
The dermis is the thick, supportive layer of skin that sits directly beneath the epidermis. It provides the structural strength, elasticity and nourishment that keep skin firm and functioning.
The dermis is built largely from a matrix of collagen and elastin fibres produced by cells called fibroblasts. Collagen supplies tensile strength and volume, while elastin allows the skin to stretch and recoil. Embedded within this matrix is a network of blood vessels that feed the avascular epidermis above, along with nerve endings, sweat glands, oil glands and hair follicles. A gel-like substance rich in molecules such as hyaluronic acid fills the spaces between fibres and helps the layer hold water, contributing to plumpness and cushioning.
Over time, fibroblast activity slows and existing collagen and elastin degrade faster than they are replaced, which is closely linked to wrinkles, sagging and thinner-looking skin. Ultraviolet exposure accelerates this breakdown, making sun protection central to preserving dermal structure. Ingredients associated with supporting the dermis include retinoids and vitamin C, which are studied for their role in collagen-related pathways, though most topical actives reach this layer only to a limited degree.
